31st January

Today we edited all the shots we had. To make sure it was perfect yesterday we filmed quite a few shots of each shot. This made it take a while to look through all the shots and edit them. We managed to present our rough cut with some titles in there but there is still some work to do regarding editing and placing off titles. We also need to add in the typography for when I (bubble girl) appear alone.

We did things like speed up the time of some of the shots. This was on things like when all the comes come together and meet in the middle, this took too long so we sped up the shot so the sequence carried on being fast.
To do this you simply change the rate to a number over a hundred and clicked okay

30th January.

I was really impressed with the progress we made today. We went to abbey ruins to film the last scene were we all come together as a group. We had some trouble keeping the tripod up as it was very windy and kept making it fall over. However we managed to get all the shots we wanted. We changed some shots that were in there as we feel they wasn't needed. We also had trouble as it turned dark whilst we were shooting so we changed the lighting and are hoping we can put an effect on it tomorrow.

Filming.

This is a film we made from when we took pictures of our filming. We thought we'd make a video of all of our shots put together as something different on our blogs. This consists of images of us working on the mise-en-scene. Particularly in this video we are making the costumes for the fantastagirls  which will look the film look more believable in the world of media. the costumes fit to the common stereotypical tight costumes for girls and skirts. The names of the superheros are printed on the back rather than the front, the purpose for this was for the shots when the girls are getting changed to show their names, and give a hint to their powers.

29th January

Today we have edited shots that we filmed the other day. We are really happy with the way the shots look. the shots are more bright which gives positive connotations of the superheros. Already we can see it is a lot better than the first. Although the first sequence had a lovely shot of the girls by the river we have now got a individual shot of a low shot of each girl. This was to make the girls look more powerful. We then put all the girls together and overlapped the image with 'the fantastagirls'.

29th January.

Editing.
We were able to edit the start of our title sequence. We're really happy with the way everything turned out, it looks a lot better than our original one. We managed to add the 'working title' logo and clip into the beginning of the title sequence. We had some trouble with the 'cross dissolve' so we will try and fix it tomorrow.

Music

As we've recently changed our title sequence we also thought we should change the music to fit in with the target audience. It is now up beat and shows clearly that our film is aimed towards young girls. You can see this by the upbeat music used.

We used the same website as last time to avoid copyright. Now we have 2 options that we feel best suit with the title sequence.

Typography.

We've stuck to the same typography as our title of our film. This shows our film to be primary aimed at children. We've found the main people included in films and added them in.

Monday 28 January 2013

28th January.

Today we started re- shooting, we managed to film the first 6 shots of the girls getting ready. We had to iron our individual logos onto our t-shirts which meant we could film us each putting them on. However on 'fire girls' t-shirt we had trouble getting the logo to stick, some of it came off which ending up looking good and sticking to the power she has.

Props

This is part of our costumes for our fantastagirls. Each girl has a colour to match their power and different typography on the back to show their power. For this part of the costume we brought the t-shirts for primark and printed the typography on paper that could then be transfered onto the t-shirts with an iron. With this t-shirt we will wear black skirts and tights to complete our superhero look.

Background on Distributor

Working Title Films is a British film production company, based in London. The company was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983. It produces feature films and several television productions. Eric Fellner and Bevan are now the co-owners of the company.

This is our distributor for our film. although the company haven't distributed any of our ideal film it has still released films around our genre and therefore they will know how to market it. Working title have often worked with others to produce a film but we are taking a risk and making the sequence just a working title film.

Thunderbirds is a prime example of a final that working title has made that the audience was young kids. This shows that the studio will have experience with producing a film of our target audience

25th January

Today we decided to go to bexelyheath to find our costumes. We had planned before to make dresses for each of the characters. However, this would have been time consuming and costly. Instead now we have planned to wear a short sleeved top with black skirts and tights. We feel this still resembles the stereotypical superhero costumes without spending too much time or money on making them.

We brought the tops in each individual colours; red for Fire Girl, purple for Giggle Girl, pink for Bubble Girl and blue for  Air Girl. We hope the colours will hint at each of their powers. We have already purchased ironing paper that will allow us to print our typography onto the clothing. This will be shown off in the title sequence to show off who we our whilst the credits come up.

24th January

We've changed our whole title sequence. The first wasn't working so in order to make it better we've changed it. However we've stuck to the same typography and music as before as we feel it has the same effect. Now Zorak is not show til the beginning of the film and the title sequence focuses on the girls getting ready and becoming a group. So today we focused on our story boards and have planned to film Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. We have decided our locations of Bobbies house and Abbey Ruins. Fornutalty for us these locations are near together so we will be able to fill both on the same day, re shoot in need be.

We felt that This location would be perfect as it has a nice scenery and not many people would get in the way of our shots.

Old Footage mash up.

This is a load of old shots that we made into a video. It shows how bad the old shots were and how we have improved them since. The footage before didn't really together. Seeing the footage now has a completely different impact than we first looked at it. We're much happier with the progress we've made, we believe the narrative is much more clearer now.

New Idea's

After editing our footage and putting the shots together we feel that the title sequence isn't working. We didn't feel that the sequence showed what the film was going to be about. We spoke to Leanne about it and she agreed and helped us with our new ideas.

Now our title sequence will include the fantastagirls walking down the stairs in their pyjamas, only showing their bodies, not their faces. We will then have a member doing something associated with their power. For example, Hayley (Air Girl) will be out of the shower, and she will write my name on the mirror, as it would be all steamy, creating the sense of air. For Megan, (Giggle Girl) we will have her applying makeup which she will then make a mistake which will make her laugh, and she will then write her name on from this. Me, (Bubble Girl) will simply be eating my chewing gum, which will pop and we will edit to include 'Bubble Girl' into it. Bobbie, (Fire Girl) will be eating her breakfast, and her name will appear in the food, which we will shot hot, creating the sense of heat. Newspapers will be set aside each of the Fantastagirls to show they are famous this will also bring suspense of them coming together.

We still feel that we should show the girls individually getting ready and coming together at the end to hint at the narrative. We felt that the title sequence consisted to much of Zorak and not enough of the girls. Although Zorak is important to the piece we feel the girls are the main importance and that the beginning scene should focus on Zorak to show the clear Binary opposition. We have made a new filming schedule of set dates to film and the next week to edit. We hope this will give a clearer representation of what the film is about and give hints to the audience of what to expect in the film.

We know we don't have long to film and to edit but we feel that it will look better than the first. We are much happier with what we have planned already and have plans to film next week. None of the sequence will be filmed in school, however we have no set locations yet.

Tuesday 22 January 2013

22nd January

Today we filmed a shot of Zorak reading a newspaper this is the end shot as when he puts down the newspaper he sees the fantastagirls come together, showing a clear binary opposition. We filmed this shot a couple of times to ensure it was perfect and explored a range of different angles to see which one best fitted in with the sequence. I am pleased with the progress we have made today. Although it was the last shot we still had to focus on the littlest detail.

We also used a green screen to film the close up of Zorak as a child. This is because if we do this with both the Zorak's it will be easier to make a fade between the two. We can also used the same background for both. As a child he is sad so we have a close up of the child being upset after seeing his dad being interviewed and then have it fade into a close up of the older version of him to show him angry and wanting revenge. To do this we experimented with different facial expressions to see exactly how angry he is and what would be best suited.

We also edited more of our film. It is now all coming together we only have a few more shots to shoot before it is finished. We also need to research more into our typography to fit in with our genre,

14th Janurary

We managed to get quite a lot of filming done today. We filmed four shots that lasted about ten minutes. After this we also managed to begin some editing and we now have some ideas on what music we would like. Now we have a choose of three, which were found off the website https://audionetwork.lgfl.org.uk to avoid copy right. These are upbeat and fast paced musics to fit in with the genre. We also hope that they will collide with the cuts to make the whole sequence quite fast and fit in with the conventions of a typical superhero film. This could relate to The Incredibles as in theirs it is very fast and there is a raising of the music when a character kicks at the camera of does any major action. This gave us the original idea for this, so we have the same music producer as the one that made the music for The Incredibles.

We have some ideas for who we would like the special effects to be but they are not completely set in stone. We are going to do some further research into the music producers of The Avengers and Sky High and see which one fits better with our film. We can also use these three films for other people involved in the making process. It is also a good idea that we do research into who has previously worker with our director Mike Mitchell.

Typography.

The typography for each character is based around what their individual power is. You can also tell the audience by the style of them. The logo used for 'Fantastagirls' mirrors the girls as a group, each being a 'star'. Each typography gives hints to what the girls powers are and fit in with the codes and conventions of superheroes. We are hoping to include these in the title sequence.

The titles are order in which the characters will appear in the sequence. Giving them their own individual moment before coming together as a group.

Results for typography.

This is the typography with the highest mark given. Luckily for us it was our favorite one. The response chose this as it was "bold, eye catching and magical". We're happy we now have a typography chosen for our piece, we feel as thought the font matches our narrative and stands out to the audience. Although the survey didn't request ages so we don't know who has answered it, it could be assumed that the typography suits our target audience and they will like it like our respondents.

The results were:
  • 50% rated it 8 out of 10
  • 25% rated it 9 out of 10
  • 25 % rated it full marks
This is our chosen typography that will be featured in our title sequence for the Director and other helping staff. It will also appear at the end for the end title.

10th Janurary

Today we filmed 4 more shots. We have slightly changed our filming from the story boards as we found some shots or choices off scenery were not right to film in. For example one shot was planned to have a person walking down the street with a phone to show the mobile app, but the over the shoulder shot did not show the app well, instead we have changed it to a person in a office, however it is still an over the shoulder shot.
This means the storyboards will have to be changed to fit this. The shots we have changed are for good reason. We feel they fit in with the title sequence more and there is less risk of the footage looking bad when we go to edit it. The purpose of the women walking and looking at her iphone app was to show that the girls are famous all around the world. Iphone apps are hugely popular at the moment and shows we could also be appealing to a wider audience. Although the footage has been changed it still shows the original purpose but focuses more on the app itself rather than what the character is doing.

Typograpy Survey

This is the survey we created for our typography. We narrowed it down to four and made a survey. We wanted to see which one the audience thought would be better suited for our film. These were found from dafont.com to avoid copy right. Results will be posted soon to determine which one will be the one in our title sequence.

The survey was made on surveymonkey.com which will automatically collect the results and give a percentage to help us see which one the audience preferred.

9th January

We have created the storyboards and are happy with the way things are going. We have also made a time scheduled of when we will be filming and what time. This will hopefully help us to stay on task and to make sure we have enough time to edit. Our locations have been chosen and we feel these are perfect for our genre. An example of one is danson park. This is were all the girls come together, if we get the filming right we could have a nice shot of the girls standing by the river. This way the sun will be shinning behind the girls and reflecting on the river to give the girls a more pwerful affect. This would also be the last shot as the girls would have come together and the title would layer over the top of the image.
So far we've filmed about 6 shots. We still have quite a bit to do and we will be filming again tomorrow. Hopefully we can get all the filming finished  tomorrow.

Typography.

This is an option for our typography. We like the fact that it looks as if it is hand written. It doesn't show the narrative so were not sure if this is the right one for our film.

This is our second option. We like this as it looks magical and gives our hint at our narrative. We like this the best out of the four but we want to know what the audience think. The typography relates back to our superheroes.

Our third option. This reminds us of comic book writing and this is suitable for us as our film is a superhero film. It is also very easier to read and eye catching.

Finally, our last option. We liked this because its different and we'd hope it would make them question what its about. However, we feel its not as easier to read as the others.

Danson filming.

This seemed the perfect location for the four girls to final come together. However we may have to re-shoot them to match the lighting and weather as the other shots in the title sequence.

Some of the pictures show the weather issues. We needed a sunny day to film our sequence as it determines the mood of the piece. Luckily the film does not show that the lake is actually iced over. We picked the area with the least amount of ice to film.

The shots worked out better than we expected, we had hoped before hand to have the sun reflecting off the river, however we ended up with the sun in the shot as well. This makes the girls look more powerful. We used an establishing shot to show the girls in the distance but not show their faces until the very end. Tomorrow we are hoping to put all the shots together to see what they look like as they are at the moment.

Monday 7 January 2013

7th January

Today we decided to film, it seemed like the perfect time as the weather was nice. We had to change our original location that we had planned as it wasn't affordable or practical. We also wasn't sure if the location had the resources that we needed to film.

Instead we decided to film by bexleyheath train station. This was mainly because we knew that they had a newspaper stand, which meant we could clearly show a ordinary person pick up the newspaper and read about the fantastagirls. This would show how widespread they was and how popular they was. We tried a pan of her walking which we felt didn't work so we then tried other shots such as her walking into the shot and picking up the newspaper. we then had an over the shoulder shot of the actual newspaper.

We had some trouble filming. We couldn't have any cars or buses in the shot as we felt it would draw off the focus. We could ask people to stop walking so many people got in our shot so it was very time consuming to re-shot and wait for the people to get out of the shot.

Typography

Common order of titles:
  •  Name of studio
  •  Name of production company
  •  Producer name
  •  Staring (starting with the main actors)
  •  Featuring (featured actors)
  •  Casting director
  •  Composer of music
  •  production designer
  •  Editor
  •  Director of photography
  •  producer
  •  writers
  •  director

Looking at typography in existing productions.

Catch me if you can
  • Titles are integrated into sequence (become part of the action)
  • Exit screen smoothly looks elegant and could resemble the character who plays the police officer.
  • Typography looks stylised and works in sync with music.
  • High production value
    Font is sans serif
  • 60's styled which hints time era of film/setting
  • Informal font suggests film wont have a consistent serious tone and elements of humour could be present.
  • Smaller words are serif which resembles an old typewriter which again references the 60's and suggests significance of the object in the film.
The genre and the target audience to be identified through the typography. The typography is well used throughout, but would not be suitable for our groups title sequence. The shapes used are similar to Saul Bass' work with title sequence.
